Quillan Salkilld Details Potential Injury After Dominant Submission Win Over Mateusz Gamrot
Quillan Salkilld secured a decisive first-round submission victory at UFC Vegas 120, but the win may come with a physical cost.
Salkilld, facing his most notable opponent to date in Mateusz Gamrot, delivered a strong performance with a first-round rear-naked choke submission. The 26-year-old fighter is rapidly ascending the lightweight division, with Gamrot ranked No. 6 by the Meta rankings panel prior to their bout.
Despite the significant boost to his career, Salkilld is concerned about a potential injury that could sideline him. Speaking on the UFC Vegas 120 post-show, Salkilld recounted the moment he believes the injury occurred.
“During an early grappling exchange, he caught my ankle,” Salkilld explained. “In training, I might have yielded to avoid injuring my knee. He had my ankle twisted at about a 90-degree angle. I was determined not to concede a bad position, so I turned into it and forced it. I usually avoid that to protect my knee during training.
“This time, I just went with it and heard a slight pop. Even as I was applying the rear-naked choke, I could feel it. I thought, ‘Damn, if I don’t finish this, my knee is going to be sore later.’ It would have been painful by the second or third round. It’s a little tender now.”
Salkilld has been undefeated since his professional MMA debut loss in early 2021, boasting a 13-fight win streak. He has finished his last four opponents in the first round, including a notable head kick knockout of Nasrat Haqparast.
