Sabalenka's US Open Comeback: Title Defence Almost Over Before Fightback
Aryna Sabalenka, focused on retaining her US Open title, expressed her happiness at the prospect of a "three-peat." The match against sixth seed Linda Noskova saw Sabalenka initially in control, leading 5-2. However, a dropped service game and a subsequent tie-break, marred by double faults and missed break points, led to a deciding set.
Despite further service breaks in the second set, Sabalenka staged a dramatic turnaround, winning three consecutive games to take a 4-2 lead in the decider. She then secured the tie-break for the tenth consecutive time at the US Open, dating back to 2021, sealing her victory with an ace on a second serve. This quarter-final win marks her second since March, showcasing a resurgence in form after earlier exits in Toronto and Cincinnati.
Sabalenka acknowledged the physical resilience required for these matches and the confidence gained from such a hard-fought victory. "Knowing that physically my body can handle these matches again, I'm super happy with that," she stated. "And of course, these kind of tight matches give you so much confidence that you're back and you're ready to do anything it takes to get the win."
For Noskova, the defeat ended an impressive streak of 11 consecutive Grand Slam singles wins, despite outperforming Sabalenka in winners and saving a significant portion of break points faced.
