Real Madrid Transfer Target Schlotterbeck: Dortmund Contract Renewal Not Close
This summer, Real Madrid is prioritizing the acquisition of a central defender, though their final choice remains unclear. Initially, their primary target was Dayot Upamecano from Bayern Munich, but the French international signed a new contract with the Bavarian giants in February, committing his future to the club.
Several other potential candidates have been linked with 'Los Blancos,' including Castello Lukeba, Nico Schlotterbeck, and Ibrahima Konate. The Liverpool defender was initially not considered by Real Madrid, but after Upamecano's contract renewal and given Konate's potential availability as a free agent, his candidacy has resurfaced on Madrid's agenda. Another player Real Madrid has been most strongly linked with is Nico Schlotterbeck from Borussia Dortmund.
Schlotterbeck Denies Imminent Dortmund Contract Renewal
In recent weeks, rumors circulated that Schlotterbeck was nearing a new agreement with Borussia Dortmund in Germany. The 26-year-old's contract expires in 2027, and as he approaches its final year, this situation has drawn the attention of several top clubs, seeing a potential market opportunity. In an interview with BILD, quoted by Diario AS, Schlotterbeck denied that a deal with Dortmund is imminent.
“I'm glad you asked because I read about it in your news today. To be honest, I have to categorically deny it. Unfortunately, we haven’t reached that point yet,” Schlotterbeck stated. “I negotiated with Sebastian [Kehl, former BVB sporting director] for a long time. Sebastian is no longer here. Now Ole [Book, sporting director] will be my contact person, along with Lars [Ricken, Managing Director]. That’s why I was looking forward to the question. But what you’re saying is not true at all. I’ve already spoken with him, but we haven’t reached the point where a renewal is imminent. It’s also tough for BVB fans, but as I’ve said, it’s not an easy situation for me.”
Real Madrid Expected to Have Priority
Reports from Germany previously indicated that Schlotterbeck is keen on a move to Real Madrid this summer and would prioritize them if an offer is made. Bayern Munich, his other preferred destination, is less likely to pursue him after Upamecano's contract extension. The question remains whether 'Los Blancos' will be willing to meet Borussia Dortmund's asking price for a player who is beyond the age bracket they typically invest heavily in.
