Hansi Flick Confirms Key Returns for Barcelona, Raphinha Out with Mental Break

Barcelona's coach, Hansi Flick, has announced the comeback of Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde after more than a month sidelined due to injury. Nevertheless, the simultaneous setback of losing Raphinha, especially before facing what Flick termed 'one of Europe's elite teams,' has cast a shadow over the team's return from the international break.

Eric Garcia, another player recently out with injury, will also rejoin Kounde and Balde, significantly boosting Flick's defensive options. However, Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong is still awaiting his return to group training.

Flick stated, "The positive news is the return of Kounde, Balde, and Eric. As for Frenkie, he should be able to begin training with the squad next week. But we need to take it cautiously, step by step; patience is key."

This season, Barcelona's performance has noticeably declined in Raphinha's absence, as he has frequently been in and out of the squad due to multiple injuries. He is scheduled to rejoin the team in Barcelona on Sunday, having been granted a period of rest in Brazil prior to commencing his recovery.

Flick commented, "There's no one to blame here. It's an injury, an inherent part of football, and we must accept it. Its timing is unfortunate, which is disappointing for us, and now we'll need to figure out how to manage it, given our strong squad depth."

He further explained, "These situations occur. He traveled to Brazil. Typically, we prefer injured players to remain here. We spoke via FaceTime, and he was quite dejected. To help him unwind and refresh his mind, we collectively decided with Deco that he could spend a few days relaxing with his family in Brazil. Sometimes, unconventional decisions are necessary."

Raphinha's Alternatives – 'I'm Pleased Gavi is Available'

While Manchester United loanee Marcus Rashford is considered the frontrunner to fill Raphinha's role on the left wing, Flick's suggestion of Gavi as a potential alternative was unexpected, especially as Gavi only saw eight minutes of play before the recent international break.

Flick stated, "I'm content with Marcus; he's performing strongly. He's experienced some physical issues lately, but this presents an opportunity for him. We also possess other viable choices such as Fermin or Gavi, who is currently operating at a very high standard. I'm delighted to see him regain that level in training. We'll assess our options and make a decision, as we have several strong contenders."

Flick has consistently praised Diego Simeone's team, despite Barcelona's record of two wins and one loss in their three encounters this season. Crucially, Atletico advanced to the Copa del Rey final during these meetings.

"Yes, it's a match against one of the top teams in both the league and Europe," Flick remarked. "Consequently, they possess immense quality, and any player can be a game-changer. It's crucial for us to avoid repeating the mistakes from our last visit there. I was pleased with today's training session, and we face two extremely significant months ahead."

He added, "Griezmann is an exceptional player; his style of play is so fluid, almost as if he's dancing on the pitch."

A notable concern following their defeat at the Metropolitano Stadium was the pitch condition, where several Barcelona players struggled with their footing during the first leg of their Copa del Rey clash.

Flick addressed this, stating, "We've discussed it. I've informed the players that they need to examine this issue, and they might have to adjust their studs. It's their responsibility to prepare and adapt to the conditions."
