Hansi Flick: Barcelona's Pitch Concerns at Metropolitano Unofficial

Barcelona's manager, Hansi Flick, appeared less than pleased with the playing surface at the Metropolitano stadium as his team prepared for a crucial Champions League match against Atletico Madrid. Barcelona faces the challenge of overcoming a 2-0 deficit from the first leg of their encounter in the Spanish capital.

During his pre-match press conference, Flick emphasized his desire for his team to play with attacking bravery while maintaining defensive solidity. In parallel, player Lamine Yamal expressed confidence in their comeback prospects, downplaying the idea of it being a "miracle." However, the Barcelona head coach's primary concern seemed to be the condition of the pitch.

Flick was observed inspecting the pitch and reportedly commented to UEFA delegate Christian Kofoed that it was excessively dry and the grass was too long for optimal play. According to reports from Diario AS, no formal complaint regarding the pitch has been submitted to UEFA. While UEFA regulations stipulate that grass length must not exceed 3cm, the watering of the pitch is the responsibility of the host club.

Atletico Madrid has strongly refuted claims of a subpar playing surface. The same outlet suggests that Atletico maintains the pitch is not in poor condition, noting it was significantly worse over a month prior when Barcelona faced them in the Copa del Rey first leg at the Metropolitano. The prevailing interpretation is that a slower ball circulation might benefit Atletico, but conversely, it could also hinder Diego Simeone's side if they aim for quick counter-attacks against Barcelona.

The Metropolitano pitch has drawn criticism earlier in the season. In one instance, a ball bobbled before reaching Joan Garcia, contributing to an early goal for Los Colchoneros. Club captain Koke Resurreccion had also voiced concerns about the surface in February, shortly after it had been relaid.
