Enzo Fernandez's Agent Confirms Potential Chelsea Exit Without New Deal
Javier Pastore, the agent for Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez and a former Argentina international, has indicated he will actively seek a transfer for his client if Chelsea does not agree to the contract terms Fernandez desires. These remarks follow disciplinary action taken by Chelsea against Fernandez for comments he made earlier in the week.
Despite being under contract until 2032, Fernandez has, on four separate occasions within the last three weeks, cast doubt on his long-term commitment to Chelsea. Amid Real Madrid's reported interest in acquiring a midfielder, Fernandez has twice stated his preference to live in the Spanish capital. Pastore appeared surprised by the strong reaction to his client's comments, telling The Athletic that the two-match ban was "unfair."
“Enzo genuinely didn’t grasp the gravity of the situation. When the coach informed him, he accepted the decision because he is a highly professional individual who is always fully committed to his club and respects management choices. However, we simply don't understand the punishment. He didn’t mention any specific club or explicitly state a desire to leave Chelsea; quite the opposite. He merely mentioned Madrid, the city, because he was asked which European city he’d like to live in one day. His choice was Madrid due to the language, its similarity to Buenos Aires, and the cultural and climatic aspects – it’s a natural inclination for an Argentine to say that. But at no point did he express a wish to depart Chelsea or London.”
“I must reiterate: he never said he wanted to leave, nor did he claim he’d rather live in Madrid than London. He is not disrespecting anyone.”
“The punishment is completely unjust – a two-match ban for a player at a crucial time for Chelsea, with Champions League qualification at stake, and considering he is one of the team’s most vital players.”
‘We’ll explore other options if there is no agreement’
Pastore then disclosed that recent contract negotiations between Fernandez and Chelsea had stalled. He elaborated,
“Yes, there have been discussions about renewing his contract. We initiated these talks around December or January, but we couldn't reach a mutually agreeable resolution. Given that Enzo’s current contract extends for another six years, we decided not to proceed with a renewal at that time because the proposed terms were not satisfactory for either us or the player. Considering Enzo's current capabilities and market value, he deserves significantly more than his current earnings. We haven't reached an agreement, and perhaps this has caused some displeasure at the club, especially given his crucial role in the team, but these are matters that need to be managed professionally.”
The two parties had supposedly decided to postpone further discussions until after the World Cup, but Pastore now seems to be opening the door to a potential transfer sooner.
“We weren't interested in getting into detailed discussions about figures, contracts, and negotiations when the timing wasn't appropriate.”
“Our post-World Cup plan is to meet with Chelsea again, and if an agreement cannot be reached, we will then explore other potential opportunities.”
‘There are so many things we’re not seeing’
Interestingly, Pastore chose to share these comments with The Athletic’s Real Madrid correspondent, Mario Cortegana, rather than their Chelsea reporter. When asked if Fernandez was content at Stamford Bridge, Pastore implied otherwise.
“He is the backbone and a leader within the team; naturally, from a sporting perspective, he is pleased to be at Chelsea. He secured significant trophies last year and earned the admiration of the entire Premier League and its fan base. When a player performs at such a high level on the pitch, he is, of course, happy in his role.”
“However, there are other influencing factors in such decisions, including salary, the level of respect shown, or the way certain situations are managed… There are many aspects that we aren't currently privy to – or at least, I, as his agent, am not seeing – that suggest the club might not be handling matters in the optimal way with him.”
Even if Fernandez can plausibly deny the implications of his earlier comments, Pastore and his client appear to be the only ones who didn't find Fernandez’s repeated praise for Madrid noteworthy. While there might have been previous uncertainty about Fernandez's desire to leave Chelsea, Pastore’s latest statements have now explicitly confirmed that he will be actively investigating other options.
