The managerial position at Athletic Club is highly distinctive, and for the first time in seven years, it could be filled by a non-Spanish coach. Following Ernesto Valverde's announcement that he will step down at the end of the season, Los Leones have begun their search for a new leader.

Valverde confirmed over the weekend that his decision was made some time ago, as he concludes his third tenure and a four-year spell in charge of Athletic. Initially, his former player, Andoni Iraola, was immediately identified as the leading candidate to take over at San Mamés.

However, reports now indicate that former Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic has moved into pole position. According to Sky Sport DE (via Marca), Athletic President Jon Uriarte has Terzic in mind, and the German coach is reportedly very open to the idea of taking the job. Nonetheless, with summer elections on the horizon, it remains uncertain whether Uriarte will ultimately be the one to finalize the appointment.

Andoni Iraola and Inigo Perez Remain Strong Candidates

Despite the emergence of Terzic, Iraola undoubtedly remains among the top choices for the San Mamés dugout. While Terzic's name had been floated before Valverde’s decision went public, Iraola boasts a deep-rooted connection to Athletic, with many envisioning him managing the club at some point in his career. However, Iraola typically defers making decisions about his future until the season concludes, which might prompt Athletic to seek an option willing to commit sooner.

Another popular potential appointment is Rayo Vallecano manager Inigo Perez, who previously served as Iraola's assistant. Like Iraola, Perez's contract expires this summer, and he has garnered praise for his impressive work at Vallecas.
