CONMEBOL Awards Argentina Finalissima Title by Forfeit, Citing Spain's Absence

The highly anticipated 2026 Finalissima, intended to pit Spain against Argentina, was officially canceled earlier this month. Originally slated for Qatar, the prestigious match faced relocation due to escalating tensions in the Middle East. Ultimately, a new host venue could not be agreed upon, leading to the event's complete cancellation.

Initial blame for the cancellation was leveled by UEFA against the Argentinian Football Association, which was accused of rejecting all proposed alternative venues. However, CONMEBOL has now entered the fray, shifting the focus and pointing the finger squarely at Spain.

According to reports from Cadena SER, CONMEBOL president Alejandro Dominguez has taken a decisive stance, unilaterally declaring Argentina the winners of the 2026 Finalissima. Dominguez asserts that Spain must forfeit the title, claiming they “did not show up” for the scheduled fixture. He stated, “Argentina are two-time champions of the Finalissima. Spain did not show up.”

Spanish Football Federation Responds to Dominguez's Remarks

Dominguez's controversial declaration, made earlier in the week, prompted a swift reaction from the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). Rafael Louzan, the head of the RFEF, shared his perspective on the situation during an interview with Cadena SER. He remarked, “Well, that’s a joke, isn’t it? Just kidding. Let it be clear, let it be very clear that Spain has put everything so that this Finalissima could be played. We have not set any conditions. And, therefore, the interest that Spain had in playing it is clearly demonstrated. If the others have not had it, I do not know… I think we’re going to play it at some point. I want to understand, but if not, we’ll see you at the World Cup.”

This ongoing dispute has undoubtedly generated considerable animosity between the Spanish and Argentinian football associations. While the Finalissima may eventually take place, the immediate future could see these two powerhouses clash at this summer's World Cup, where both are considered strong contenders for success in North America.
