Barcelona's Summer Transfer Strategy: Identifying Replacements for Key Departures

Barcelona's primary transfer targets this summer are a central defender and a striker. However, the club also needs to prepare for potential player departures, which could necessitate strengthening other areas of the squad.

Joao Cancelo: A Steep Price Tag?

Joao Cancelo, currently on loan from Al-Hilal since January, is one player who might depart. While he has performed admirably, Barcelona is reportedly eager to secure him permanently, but only if they can acquire him on a free transfer from Al-Hilal and negotiate a reduced salary. Despite having just one year left on his contract, the Saudi Arabian club is reportedly demanding €15m for his services.

According to reports, former La Masia product Alejandro Grimaldo is a potential alternative for Barcelona. Juventus' Andrea Cambiaso is another option. Cambiaso is younger than Cancelo and versatile, capable of playing on both flanks. Grimaldo has previously been valued at €15-20m.

Marcus Rashford's Future at Barcelona Uncertain

Moving beyond the left-back situation, Marcus Rashford's tenure at Barcelona seems more likely to end than to continue. Benfica winger Andreas Schjelderup and RCD Mallorca's Jan Virgili are seen as prospective long-term investments who would command significantly lower salaries than Rashford.

Spanish International Eyed as Wojciech Szczesny's Replacement

Wojciech Szczesny's future also hangs in the balance. Despite the veteran Polish goalkeeper signing a two-year extension last summer, a second retirement this summer remains a possibility. Should Szczesny decide to hang up his gloves, Spain international Alex Remiro from Real Sociedad is reportedly Barcelona's preferred successor.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen is set to return from his loan spell at Girona. However, it's unclear whether he would accept a backup role to Joan Garcia or if Barcelona would seek to offload him. Ter Stegen still has two years remaining on his current contract.
