Madrid-based studio Out of the Blue has revealed that Call of the Elder Gods, the highly anticipated sequel to their acclaimed title Call of the Sea, will launch on May 12th. The game is slated for release on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and Nintendo Switch. It will also be accessible on Game Pass from day one.
Similar to its predecessor, this continuation is described in the press release as a "single-player, first-person puzzle adventure with a strong emphasis on narrative." Players will follow protagonists Harry Everhart, a professor, and Evangeline Drayton, a student, as they journey to "the farthest corners of the Earth" in pursuit of "the truth about their vanished loved ones."
The game once again centers its puzzles on observation and the clever use of found objects. This time, players will utilize both protagonists to tackle challenges that bend the boundaries of time and space. Its narrative is inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's The Shadow Out of Time, taking players through diverse locations both within our world and beyond.
The original Call of the Sea was a pleasant surprise in 2020. It was praised for having clear inspirations without trying to reinvent the genre, successfully blending Lovecraftian fantasy with traditional puzzles to craft a supernatural adventure with a tangible, earthly feel. Before embarking on this sequel, Out of the Blue also developed American Arcadia, another narrative-driven game where, though not Lovecraftian, things are certainly not as they seem.
